Demian Maia staked his claim for a shot at the UFC welterweight title with a stunning first round submission of former champion Carlos Condit last night in Vancouver.
The 38-year-old wasted little time in taking control of the fight and quickly executed a rear naked choke to end the fight with just under two minutes gone in the opening round.
Maia, who beat SBG fighter Gunnar Nelson at UFC 194 last December, throws a spanner in the works in the welterweight division with the victory. Newly crowned champion Tyron Woodley looks set to take on Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson, despite previously admitting he would have relished the chance to have fought Nick Diaz at UFC 202.

"I am just so happy now," Maia said after the fight. "I hope now I can fight for a title shot.
"If he will fight first, I will wait for the winner of Woodley and 'Wonderboy,'" he added.
