Willie Mullins explains why taking shortcuts drying horses is a "mortal sin" in racing

The 2016 Cheltenham Festival was another positive one for Willie Mullins as the trainer enjoyed seven winners to finish as top trainer.

But what are the methods behind the magic?

He joined Off The Ball to talk about the attention to detail he relies upon and his avoidance of shortcuts in preparation.

"You've just got to get to make sure that people just do it the way it needs to be done and sometimes you get new staff in and they try to bring their own ideas or take shortcuts. The odd time they come up with a good idea but mostly they're shortcuts which are bad ideas," he said, before sharing one example with Joe Molloy.

"A simple thing like drying horses off to take enough time to do it. It amazes me how people take shortcuts drying them off. Some people wash them, scrape them, put covers on them. I prefer to let them dry naturally. I prefer to give them plenty of time to do it.

"It'd be like you coming in after training, whether you run or play soccer or rugby and you go in and have a quick shower and you're out, you're late somewhere and you want to meet someone. Next thing you're going down the road and you realise that you haven't cooled off and you're starting to perspire in your clothes and people do that with horses and put them back in the stables too quick. Mortal sin."
