World Anti-Doping Agency remove Kenya from list of non-compliant countries

Kenya have been taken off the list of "non-compliant" countrie, by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

A provisional suspension for Kenya's anti-doping agency has also been lifted.

Kenya previously failed to meet WADA's criteria and athletes were subjected to special testing before the Rio Games.

The news comes on the eve of the games with the Opening Ceremony just hours away.

50,000 spectators are expected to fill the Maracana stadium for the ceremony which starts at around midnight Irish time.

In a statement, WADA confirmed: "Following a circular vote of its Foundation Board members, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) wishes to announce that it has removed the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) from the list of signatories previously deemed non-compliant with the 2015 World Anti-Doping Code (the Code). Kenya has drafted and adopted anti-doping legislation now deemed to be in line with the Code.

"As stipulated in Article 23.5.5 of the Code, WADA will report the declarations of non-compliance to the Sports Movement and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)."
