Graeme McDowell out of Travelers Championship after caddie's Covid-19 positive

Graeme McDowell has confirmed his withdrawal from this week's Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour.

The 2010 US Open winner is to stand down after his caddie Ken Comboy tested positive for Coronavirus.

He's the second player to withdraw from the tournament after golfer Cameron Champ tested positive for Covid-19.

McDowell says he's withdrawing from the event "for the protection of the field", as well as his own physical and mental well-being.

"For the protection of the field and for my own physical and mental well-being, I’m going to take a test tomorrow morning then jump on a private plane," he told Golf Week's Eamon Lynch.

"I’m going to get myself out of here, home to Florida and decide whether I need to quarantine myself from my family."

Comboy did not travel to this week's event in Connecticut, remaining in Florida to quarantine after experiencing symptoms of the virus, including a sore throat and losing his sense of smell, before being tested on Saturday after McDowell's missed cut in Texas. He returned a positive result yesterday. McDowell is not showing symptoms of the virus, but says he had been in close contact with his caddie last week.

"But the alarm bells have started to ring now that Kenny has failed this test.

"We’re a close-knit team. We roomed together last week, we spent six hours in a car. He’s carrying the virus so in some way I have to be carrying it too."

Yesterday, Cameron Champ told the PGA Tour website after his positive result, "I feel great physically and I was obviously surprised and disappointed to learn of the test result.

"It’s important now to take the necessary steps and measures to protect others, including my loved ones."

The tour is expected to release the full results from its pre-tournament screening today.

The PGA Tour's Health and Safety Plan insists that players who test positive must isolate for a period of ten days.
