Graham Hunter: 'Bayern went to Porto suffering hugely'

There is usually a shock or two in the Champions League knockout stages, and for the quarter-finals, so far it has to be Bayern Munich's 3-1 first leg defeat at FC Porto.

What went wrong and are there any underlying issues to keep manager Pep Guardiola up at night?

Off The Ball's European football correspondent Graham Hunter highlighted injuries which saw Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, David Alaba miss out on the match.

"Increasingly over the last two months, he has had to cope with an injury plague and there's a bill for that - somebody is responsible. I don't claim to know that it's Pep's training methods or the fallout that has happened between Pep and the club doctor, although there is clearly tension between [Hans-Wilhelm] Müller-Wohlfahrt and Pep about the way in which Javi Martinez and Thiago built back from their repetitive and damaging injuries," said Graham.

"But they went to Portugal suffering hugely, not just with the players who were missing, but also that the ones who went on the pitch felt embattled and felt that they were an elite team which was clinging on. There was a sense among the players that they felt embattled and not dominant."

Graham also spoke of the differences between Guardiola and sporting director Matthias Sammer.

He also touched on Barcelona, who beat  PSG comfortably last night, just days after dropping points against Sevilla domestically.
