'In no way does it reimburse the serious financial costs that are incurred by Gaelic players'

Today the Gaelic Players Association launched the results of a survey which highlight the concerns of student county players.

It comes during a period when the welfare of inter-county players have been in the spotlight.

Bernard Flynn wrote about his concerns in The Irish Mirror and tonight on Off The Ball he called for a greater level of reimbursement.

"€380 or €400 was what two players I spoke to today got from the grant and it's a total injustice and in no way does it reimburse the serious financial costs that are incurred by Gaelic players during the duration of their careers. They're getting a raw deal and it's coming to the stage where it's getting very serious, the pressure that is on players personally and financially," he said, going on to say that "the GAA as a hierarchy never really value the players" and that the players need someone to get them a fair deal.

GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell also joined us and Flynn on the line and he was incredulous about the lack of uproar when grants were initially cut.

"I can't believe that 75 per cent of those young men's grants - €3.5M to €900K -  were cut without a virtually a word about it and that was wrong," he said.

With the prospect of stronger economic growth, Farrell wants to see previous levels of funding for players restored.
