'It's unfair to call it a defensive system' - Brian Hogan on Waterford

Brian Hogan says it's unfair to brand Waterford's system as "defensive", given the number of scores they are getting.

The former Kilkenny hurler and ex-Tipp corner-forward Eoin Kelly joined us on Off The Ball to review the weekend's matches, including the big one in Munster between Waterford and Munster.

Hogan shared his thoughts about the much-talked about Deise system: "First and foremost, it's work-rate. I was in Thurles for the league final and I watched them completely dismantle Cork and I've seen them in one or two other games and what they do bring is a massive level of work-rate and intensity around the middle part of the field with their half-forward line dropping back and helping out their midfielders, who are subsequently dropping back a bit around their half-back line. They're congesting that area. I think it's unfair to call it a defensive system because they're racking up large scores and they're actually entertaining to watch."

Kelly believes there is still "great spirit" in the Cork side despite their defeat and highlighted some missed scores.

He also echoed DJ Carey's point that Jimmy Barry Murphy's hands are tied to an extent by the quality at his disposal.

"For me, when you look at their squad, they don't have the squad that the likes of Waterford or Galway have," he said.
