‘We are making progress’ | Mattie Kenny on the future of Dublin hurling

There are ‘brighter days ahead’ for Dublin hurling according the Dubs’ Senior Hurling manager Mattie Kellie after 2-26 t0 0-24 loss to Cork.

Dublin lost to Cork in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Quarter Final on Saturday, after an impressive showing in the early stage of the match.

Speaking to Off The Ball’s Jonathan Higgins after the match, Kenny suggested that their strong opening is only the beginning for the Dubs on the hurling front.

“We started very brightly and controlled that first 10-12 minutes of the game and created a lot of scoring opportunities,” Kenny said.

“In hindsight, we needed a goal at that stage to really threaten the scoreboard and open up a gap. In fairness to Cork they kept the scoreboard ticking.

“While we did most of the hurling in the first 10-12 minutes… we were happy with the way that we were playing and Cork got a goal maybe against the run of play which gave them the momentum.”

Kenny has been impressed with Dublin’s progress as a hurling county and will be looking forward to seeing how the young players integrate into the senior setup.

“We are making progress,” Kenny said. “Obviously we would like to be making it at a quicker rate.

“Being competitive in these games and being exposed to the business end of the championship is key to us going forward; key for Dublin going forward.

“The more we get exposed to this, the better we will deal with this in the future. Are we making progress? Of course we are!

“There are a number players that can step up to this level that we can integrate into this setup and build for the future.

“This team is getting better, it is getting better every year. We just have to go again, get our heads down and learn from the little mistakes and what happened here tonight.”
