REPORTS: Positive Covid test disrupts Wexford senior hurling preparations

It's being reported this morning that a Wexford senior hurler has tested positive for coronavirus, with doubts hanging over the team's championship preparations.

According to an exclusive from Michael Verney in the Irish Independent today the player is self-isolating, with Davy Fitzgerald's backroom team and players awaiting the results of further tests.

The Model County have a Leinster semi-final against Galway scheduled for Halloween night, with Kilkenny set to take on either Dublin or Laois in the other last-four tie. The provincial decider is currently fixed for Saturday, November 14th.

Shane Roche's senior footballers have a crucial National League Division Four trip to Limerick to contend with this weekend, with a number of absentees from their panel also hampering the build-up.

It's understood his squad are undergoing testing also after cases potentially linked to club final celebrations within the county. Wexford are of the counties availing of the GAA’s rapid Covid-19 testing programme.

Roche replaced former Kerry star Paul Galvin as manager last month, after he left the role citing a family move back to the west of Ireland amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

"My business has... undergone significant growth in the past few months and needs attention. I have enjoyed the past 16 months watching, coaching and promoting football in the county since June 2019.

"I would like to thank the Wexford County Board for the opportunity and support. Thank you to the players and backroom staff also. I have strong belief in the talent in the county.

"I wish everybody associated with Wexford football success in the near future."

Wexford GAA released a statement of their own thanking Galvin, and explaining why Roche was the ideal man to fill his shoes.

"We appreciate and understand the changes in Paul's personal circumstances which have led to his decision and we wish paul and Louise well in their new home in the west of Ireland and their new business endeavours.

"Shane has been heavily involved as part of Paul's backroom team during his tenure and his considerable experience as an inter-county player and coach at schools, club and inter-county level will help build on the foundations laid by Paul earlier this season."
