Jason Day admits that he's "running on empty" as US PGA approaches

Jason Day's preparations to defend his PGA Championship title have not gone to plan after he had to rush to hospital with his wife in New Jersey.

It has been a difficult 2016 so far for a lot of the world's top players, such as Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, but Jason Day can certainly claim that he might be a bit distracted, given what has happened to him so far this week already.

Speaking ahead of the start of the US PGA Championship, Day said that there were a number of things contributing to his overall mood, one of which was the health of his family.

Day and his wife Ellie had to rush to hospital as a result of her having an allergic reaction, and Day noted that "we were there until 2am. She was kind of freaking out, which is understandable, because she went all red. I've been in that situation before when I first ate seafood so I was calm,  but she was like, 'call 911, call 911!'. The paramedics took us in and she’s fine now."

To make things worse, he added that his children Dash and Lucy have been sick with a bug, which they passed on to him. Day also has persistent problems with vertigo, which struck during the US Open and the Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Despite the health setbacks, the world number one has claimed victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship already this year, showing that he has what it takes to perform in adversity.

For the Australian, the challenge is not just a physical one, however. "I've got to really try and manage my patience out there," said Day, "because I have very little patience right now. For some reason, every time I get a little bit under the weather, I've got zero patience."

With the last major of the year teeing off on Thursday, patience is something that Day may not have time to wait for. Still, in a year full of sporting surprises, it wouldn't be a shock to see him bounce back in New Jersey, despite all the roadblocks that have been placed in his way so far.
