'It was a vile, vile challenge' - Pat Nevin on Barnes' tackle on Matic

Former Chelsea man Pat Nevin believes Blues midfielder Nemanja Matic deserves the red card he picked up for reacting to a poor challenge from Ashley Barnes.

But tonight on Off The Ball, he described the Burnley players tackle (pictured) as "vile".

"There is a line that you can just stray over. Ashley Barnes didn't stray over it, he jumped miles over it with that tackle. It was a vile, vile challenge because he gets a bit of the ball and then he knows what he's doing, I believe," said Pat, who also feels the referee needs to be under scrutiny.

"If he's seen that and has decided that there is no action needed to be taken, he shouldn't be refereeing games."

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal's overall philosophy continues to baffle as Swansea beat Manchester United 2-1.

"There isn't a Van Gaal way. There are Van Gaal ways," said Pat, who believes the Reds cannot build from the back effectively because of the lack of quality from that zone of the pitch.

"I do admire the fact that he is adaptable but it doesn't look very good yet."

Pat also assessed the first touch of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and thinks it is an area that can be improved upon by working on it.
