James Horan's insight into the madness of inter-county management

As Cork prepare for a Munster final replay against Kerry live on Off The Ball, our thoughts turned to the experience Mayo had against the Kingdom when they took them on in an All-Ireland semi-final replay last year. Mayo's former manager James Horan gave his thoughts on how to prepare a team for a replay ...

It's funny. You definitely want to look at things that worked well for you in the first game.

But there are a couple of areas where you will be obviously keen to improve on.

You don't want to over-analyse it. You don't want to burn up a load of brain power midweek. You just want to touch on a few key points subtly so that the team are aware of it and know what to do about it and then get your troops ready and go to battle again.

I'm sure [Kerry manager] Eamonn Fitzmaurice would say it as well: there's so much that can happen. You plan as much as you possibly can and you can look at all eventualities. Then there's stuff that happens during games and you can absolutely be operating on the fly.

I remember an interview Brian Cody did some years ago and he was saying that during some games it's just madness and hard to know what's going on - that's from Brian Cody himself.

There are occasions where it's madness and you're trying to do what you think is right based on what you see and work with your management team on the sideline and try and make the best decision.

Some of them work and when they work, it's fantastic. When they don't work, it's the opposite implied.

James was speaking on Off The Ball. We have the Munster final replay live on Off The Ball this evening.
