'I don't know if it's in the spirit of penalty-taking'

Former Clare All Ireland winner Jamsie O'Connor believes that the GAA needs to put an end to the confusion surrounding Anthony Nash's free-taking style.

Sunday's Munster quarter-final replay between Cork and Waterford sparked fresh debate surrounding the free-taking style of the Cork goalkeeper.

During the game, Waterford's Stephen O'Keeffe rushed off his line to block a penalty attempt from his counterpart and he was left with a badly bruised leg.

On Off The Ball tonight, Jamesie joined us to review the weekend's hurling but also gave his take on the incident in that Cork v Waterford match.

"He's not breaking the rules as it currently stands, but he's certainly bending it. I don't know if this is in the spirit of the way penalties are meant to be taken. But he's very good at it and as long as the rules are the way they are currently constituted, then he's perfectly entitled to do what he's doing," said Jamesie.

"I think the referees wanted the rule change and their interpretation is once he's made connection with the sliothar, then it's fair game and players can advance."

But Jamesie believes another can of worms could be opened if that is taken to it's logical conclusion.
