'Solskjaer chucks them on and hopes for the best' | John Giles on MUFC

John Giles believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not know what he is doing from one week to the next at Manchester United.

Giles joined Off The Ball to discuss Manchester United after their 5-0 win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

"I don't know where he's coming from, Solskjaer. I never do," said Giles.

"Obviously, if you keep doing things in your own way, you are not going to be wrong all the time. But I don't get the impression that the choices he makes are for certain reasons.

"I just think he throws them in there. I might be unfair with him, but that is how I see him. I don't see him as having an overall plan of 'This is what I'm going to do this week, this is the pairing for next week.'

"I just don't see it in him. With the players that he has, like last night, especially Marcus Rashford, they can score goals from nothing.

"I am not so sure that he knows himself what he is planning to do, or trying to do. I think it's a wing and a prayer.

"It's like Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek - I can't see the planning in that in buying him for quite a bit of money. I don't think you can play them at the same time, and they are both great players.

"I just don't get it."

Donny van de Beek

Attention was on Dutch midfielder, and Manchester United's new midfield signing, Donny van de Beek.

"I thought he did well. I think they have a problem, though, because he is very similar to Bruno Fernandes.

"He plays in a similar position - he is not a midfield player, he looks like a lad that plays in midfield and will get a few goals for you, but won't contribute much in the middle of the field in dictating play.

"Fernandes is very like that, so they have two very similar players. He is a very good player and so is Fernandes.

"But I can't see the two of them playing in the same team."

Fernandes of DVDB?

Can the two play together? Giles believes that the midfield at United is somehow muddled.

"It would be very difficult to play the two players together, in Fernandes and van de Beek.

"I can't see them playing in the same team all the time.

"The problem that they have after that is for midfield, in Pogba, Matic, Fred, and McTominay. I can't see any really good pairing there for the middle of the field.

"They are well-served with the two [van de Beek and Fernandes] but with the four players in the midfield, I don't see any good midfield two from them.

"McTominay is an honest lad, he's ok; Fred is ok, Matic is ok."
