Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh gives beautiful tribute to Weeshie Fogarty

Kerry commentating legend Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh gave Off The Ball a beautiful insight into the life and passing of Weeshie Fogarty.

Mícheál's truly touching tribute to his fellow Kerry commentator came at the launch of  Comórtas Peile Páidi Ó Sé.

"It was a strange thing now. He didn't meet any people after he was diagnosed, until the very end.

"He changed his phone number. I would loved to have gone to see him, as would a lot of people.

"He wanted people to remember him how he was. Not as he would be, maybe, going down."

Mícheál also shed some light on the 'experimental' side of Weeshie:

"Weeshie was a substitute goalie. He was a referee. He was the first man to give out a black card. Experimental!

"Coming towards the end of one match in Kerry, the match would nearly be over and he said 'I better give one - the next man to come near me with the ball will get it!'

Kerry football legend Kieran Donaghy also had his say on Weeshie's passing.

"He was was a special Kerryman - held in similar regard to Mícheál. He was quintessential Kerry, and a guy I always loved dealing with.

"He was very passionate about Kerry and you could really tell that when he was in full flow and Kerry were going well - he was a very happy man!

"He was brilliant - another fella used to say to him 'If you have the chance, say hello to my grandmother - she's at home and couldn't make it!'

"It was a tough loss for Kerry people the way it happened - he was sick a while and we weren't sure what was wrong.

"It was such a shock, and a huge crowd at his funeral - but that was no surprise because of the amount of people he touched."
