Kieran Donaghy's Shot Clock: Five things we learned from Week 5

Welcome to Kieran Donaghy's Shot Clock - a brand new weekly feature on OTB AM which sees the Kerry legend go head-to-head with an Off The Ball presenter.

These ultra competitive debates will see each side fight their corner on a range of hot topics from across the world of sport, with a two-minute timer ensuring they get to the point. There will be rapid-fire predictions and the mailbox too (email: [email protected]) where our viewers get to challenge Donaghy with their thoughts. If your argument stands out we might even throw you on air!

In the meantime, here is what we learned from Episode 5 of Kieran Donaghy's Shot Clock:

Adaptation is key for an ageing sportsperson:

Still plying his trade with great success for Garvey's Tralee Warriors in the Men's Super League, Kieran Donaghy spoke openly about the need for sportspeople to embrace change as they grow older.

"I had to adapt at 35-years-old trying to stay in the Kerry team," Donaghy recalled.

"We're gone stone mad in the GAA looking to retire people when they get beyond a certain age.

"I remember us playing against Padraig Joyce and he was absolutely brilliant, but he was older and they were saying he should retire after the game - and this guy had just been unbelievable against us."

Donaghy's message to those fighting against the light? "Retire when you feel like it."

Bryan Cooper thinks people should think twice before abusing jockeys online:

Kieran Donaghy won't be throwing himself back into Kerry contention:

After all the build up to the Garvey's Tralee Warriors vs Templeogue showdown on last week's show, success for the 36-year-old Donaghy and his Tralee club won't prompt a surprise return to Gaelic Football for the basketball star.

"No, that won't be happening," Donaghy stated defiantly.

On a "special" night for his club, Donaghy is looking forward now to a real battle as the season plays out.

Rory McIlroy is about to come good ... maybe:

"I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach," Donaghy explained by way of pumping Rory McIlroy up for the forthcoming Players Championship

"I really don't think he's suffering from nerves on a final day or he doesn't have the temperament for it.

"He's been knocking on the door the last few tournaments, he's 11/1, get on McIlroy."

Kieran has made his calls for the weekend's sporting action!

With Ger Gilroy going for Wales to beat Ireland in the Six Nations, Presenting Percy to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and both Corofin and Ballyhale Shamrocks to seal the All-Ireland club titles, Donaghy is choosing an altogether different approach.

"Ireland by 7," Donaghy reckons ahead of the Cardiff clash. Thistlecrack is his outside choice for the showpiece event at Cheltenham, while Dr Crokes & St. Thomas' of Galway are his shout for the club title.
