Spurs' trip to Leyton Orient in the English League Cup is off

Leyton Orient's Carabao Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspur is off after several members of the League Two club's first-team squad tested positive for COVID-19.

The positive tests within the Leyton Orient squad are believed in the double figures range meaning that their Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham on Tuesday night cannot go ahead.

Testing of players is not mandatory in the English Football League, unlike in the Premier League, with the authorities instead content on insisting that stringent hygiene measures are maintained and that work-place social distancing is practised.

Spurs, though, wanted a degree of reassurance before the third-round tie and they paid for Orient’s first-team squad to be tested after the 2-2 draw at home to Mansfield on Saturday.

It's not clear if the game will can be rearranged or if Tottenham will be handed a bye into the fourth-round.

"Tonight’s Carabao Cup match between Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur is not taking place this evening as scheduled", the EFL confirmed in a statement.

"Discussions are ongoing between the relevant stakeholders in regards to the implications of the decision not to play tonight’s game and a further update will be provided in due course.

"Leyton Orient, the EFL and the relevant authorities are conducting a thorough review of the club’s COVID-19 secure procedures with the view to reopening the stadium and training ground as soon as possible."
