'That's next thing to winning a major' - No holding back from Shane Lowry on Off The Ball

As Shane Lowry said on Off The Ball tonight, the Offaly man had been building momentum in his first year on the US PGA tour.

But last night's incredible win at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational tournament has launched him into the stratosphere and generated so much goodwill.

As he told our own Joe Molloy in our interview with him, it could well be a platform for greater things to come.

"I do feel like I probably should have won more but looking at my career so far, it's going on a nice, steady upward curve. So if I can keep that going, I think this is a massive win for me. This is going to give me so much confidence," he said.

"I don't really know it now, but down the line, in a month's time I'll be looking back at it thinking 'that's one of the biggest tournaments in the world. That's basically next thing to winning a major'. So there's no reason why I can't compete in every tournament I play in from now on. It can't do anything but fill me full of confidence."

Lowry also spoke to Joe about the closing moments on course, but also reflected on his rise into the Top 20 in golf's World Rankings.

"I had a look at the world rankings this morning and when you see your name 19th on the list, it's not bad. I'll take that for now and hopefully I can kick on now. Hopefully the floodgates will open and I can grab a few more wins," he said, also reacting to the messages of joy he has received from sporting superstars and fans back home, while his relaxation shone through when he talked about the perceived pressure he may face ahead of this weekend's final major of the year.
