Maloney strike punctures the Parkhead air

A curled effort from Shaun Maloney proved to be the difference as Scotland overcame Ireland 1 - 0 at Celtic Park tonight in an attritional encounter.

The goal came when a short corner was played in towards Maloney by captain Scott Brown on the left hand side of the box. The Wigan midfielder cut onto his right foot before curling a sweetly-struck effort beyond David Forde and into the back of the Irish net.

That corner had come after Ireland striker Jon Walters headed a cross onto his own crossbar, pointing towards general Scottish domination of proceedings and with Scotland having the better of the chances throughout the match.

Ireland's best chances prior to injury time came when Aiden McGeady had a shot saved by David Marshall, while a Shane Long header nestled into the goalkeeper's arms.

The Boys in Green did come close in the 92nd minute when a set piece into the box was flicked onto the Scottish crossbar. But that was as close as Martin O'Neill's side got.

The result means Ireland stay on seven points but slip to fourth as Germany and Scotland climb above - albeit on the same number of points.

Germany cruised to a 4 - 0 win over Gibraltar with goals coming from Thomas Muller (2), Mario Gotze and an own goal.

Poland are top of the group with 10 points after a 4 - 0 beating of Georgia.
