'I think Paul was right' - McGeeney on Armagh's relationship with media

Armagh manager Kieran McGeeney says he thinks his predecessor Paul Grimley was right when it came to his dealing with the media last year.

The Orchard County famously imposed a media ban in 2014 after the fallout from a mass brawl against Cavan.

Off The Ball's Dave McIntyre sat down for a chat with McGeeney earlier this week, as Armagh prepare for an Ulster championship clash against Donegal, and the ex-Kildare boss was forthright about his views on last year's media ban.

"There's a couple of different things. I think Paul was right for what he did and everybody can have their opinion. But after that game, most of the reporters said they didn't need to speak to Armagh. So if they didn't need to speak to Armagh, it would seem like a good enough relationship," said McGeeney, who added: "That's what was said - that Armagh would be soon gone and what's the point of them not talking. Of course that's going to rub Paul up."

Referencing an anecdote from Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh about his intensity, McGeeney said "The thing about me has always been to see how far you can push yourself and people like to see that as a lack of talent. It's always interesting to watch those individuals and how they perceive their own talent which has been interesting over the years."

The 43-year-old also looked ahead to next Sunday's clash against All-Ireland runners-up Donegal.
