'I felt very aggrieved last year that we didn't get to prepare the team properly'

There might have been some doubts after a disappointing campaign last year, but from what we've seen in 2014 Jimmy's still winnin' matches.

After guiding Donegal past favourites Dublin in marvelous style in the All Ireland semi-finals, McGuinness now takes his team to the brink of a second Sam Maguire success in three years.

With the days counting down to the final against Kerry, Off The Ball's Colm 'Wooly' Parkinson caught up with McGuinness at Donegal's open training session.

Although a training camp in Fermanagh is in the offing, McGuinness said that they will not be doing anything differently to normal in terms of preparation.

"This period is very demanding but the last week before the game is normally relaxed because the work is hopefully done," said the Donegal manager.

He also emphasised how much he values correct preparation for matches.

"The one thing that will always put me under pressure, if that's the right word, or frustrate me was preparation. If I don't get the preparation right, I don't feel right. I would've felt very aggrieved last year that we didn't get the opportunity to prepare the team properly and I felt doubly aggrieved because we'd won the All Ireland, the year previous," he said, explaining how injuries incurred at club level affected the team.

McGuinness also spoke about the balancing act between the club championships and the inter-county team this year and also spoke about the challenge of taking on Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice who will attempt to out-maneuver Donegal.
