Michael Conlan lays out ambitious plan for world domination in 2020

An Olympic bronze-medalist and former World Amateur champion, Ireland's Michael Conlan has his sights set on a professional breakthrough in 2020.

On what would be the third anniversary of his professional debut, Michael Conlan could become a world champion on St Patrick's Day, 2020.

"It's definitely a possibility," he explained on Thursday's OTB AM. "I don't mind, any title [will do] and I believe when I have my chance to fight for a world title, I'll grab it with both hands and not let it go."

Unbeaten in his first 12 fights as a professional, Conlan, who is currently scheduled to fight his nemesis of the 2016 Olympic games Vladimir Nikitin in mid-December, fully believes that next year will bring a world title shot that he has no intention of letting pass him by.

"A world title in 2020, that's the plan," he stressed.

"We'll go St Patrick's Day and then it is back to Belfast, so that's the first two dates in the year.

"There'll be three or four fights in the year, and the world title fight will either be in Madison Square Garden or Belfast."

Signed to a promotional contract with Top Rank, most of Michael Conlan's 12 fights have taken place in the United States of America so far.

Yet, with his most recent bout taking place in Belfast, the prospect of the local fighter challenging for a world title on home soil would ultimately prove quite enticing.

Although there is no firm plan in place for Conlan and his team regarding what belt or opponent may become available, the 27-year-old is determined that 2020 will be his year.

You can listen back to Michael Conlan discussing his professional career, the upcoming bout with Nikitin and boxing's problems with the scourge of doping and why the governing bodies are failing to act on OTB's YouTube channel.
