Mixed results for Arsenal and Southampton after red card appeals

Arsenal's appeal against the red card shown to David Luiz in Tuesday's Premier League defeat to Wolves has been unsuccessful.

The defender was sent-off just before half-time after clipping the heel of Willian Jose and conceding a penalty.

Speaking earlier, Arsenal boss Mike Arteta said he was hopeful the decision would be overturned.

"We know the law. For me it’s more about the decision and what happens in that instance. There was a very similar incident even though David is behind him, against Manchester United it was, on the side of the player that completely changes the angle of the purpose and how much it affects the players ability to finish the action, but still a similar situation. I think they will look at it," he said.

Arsenal say they accept the FA's decision.

Meanwhile, Southampton have successfully appealed the red card shown to Jan Bednarek in Tuesday's 9-nil thrashing by Manchester United.

The defender was dismissed after conceding a penalty for a foul on Anthony Martial but contact appeared to be minimal.

His case may have been helped by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who said it was a harsh decision to red card Bednarek.

"The second sending off for them, that rule should be taken away. The law that sends him off is a strange one. Bednarek definitely shouldn’t have been sent off."

It means Bednarek will now be available for Saturday's trip to Newcastle.
