Manager on the run after stealing €14m in transfer scam on Modric sale

Former manager of Dinamo Zagreb Zoran Mamic is on the run after being convicted of stealing £13m in scams involving transfers - including that of Luka Modric.

Croatian authorities have issued an international arrest warrant for Mamic, who is believed to have fled the country to avoid a four year and eight-month jail sentence,

Mamic was convicted in 2018 of stealing €14m in fraudulent play transfers, on top of tax evasion of €1.6m.

In March, Mamic resigned as coach of Dinamo three days before playing Tottenham in the Europa League after the Croatian supreme court confirmed his sentence.

“Although I don’t feel guilty, I resign as I said before I would do if the sentence was confirmed. I wish all the good luck to the club,” Mamic said in a statement at the time.

Ironically, Tottenham were involved in another sense, in that one of the cases under review was the sale of midfielder Luka Modric to Spurs. There was no implication of impropriety of Tottenham's behalf.

The sale of defender Dejan Lovren was also under scrutiny. Both players appeared as witnesses in the trial in 2018.
