'I nearly killed Roman Abramovich' | Pat Nevin on a near-miss

We don't have Pat Nevin down as the assassination sort, but it appears that he came mighty close to offing Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich while on holiday.

Speaking on the Football Show, Nevin told us about an incident on holiday on the isles of Scotland that may have been a 'sliding doors' moment for Chelsea.

"The story was that I was on the Isle of Arran, and I was driving around the west coast of Scotland," explained Nevin.

"As I drove around, I nearly hit a cyclist - I just got out of his way.

"As I went by, I checked him out and I thought 'he looks a hell of a lot like Roman Abramovich..'

"About a week later, I found out that he had been on the island that day!

"I nearly killed Roman Abramovich!"

Nevin might have had a lucky escape, given that Abramovich was travelling alongside his usual troupe of bodyguards charged with his safety.

When the Off The Ball panel expressed surprise that a man of Abramovich's means would be on a bike in the first place, Nevin explained exactly how it came to be.

"He took his massive big yacht up to the Mull of Kintyre, then he and a number of his mates and bodyguards [went cycling].

"They love the place. I go on my holidays every year there because it is brilliant, and absolutely beautiful. Apparently, he loves the whole area.

"Anyway, I told that story for a wee laugh on Sunday night - it was only on The Times' page three today! I only told it as a laugh!"

A lucky escape for Abramovich, a lucky one for Nevin and Chelsea fans might consider themselves fortunate too...
