Pat Nevin's 'surprised' reaction to Chelsea's Carneiro v Mourinho situation

Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin says the club's apparent decision to diminish the current team doctor's role in the wake of public criticism from manager Jose Mourinho is not making much sense at present.

Reports have suggested that Eva Carneiro will no longer be attending matches or training, nor visiting the team hotel after Mourinho publicly rebuked her in the wake of the 2-2 draw against Swansea against Saturday evening.

Carneiro and the Chelsea medical team had entered the field of play to treat winger Eden Hazard in stoppage time, with Mourinho furious at that seemingly normal action with his team ten men down and, in his eyes, potentially vulnerable to a Swansea attack.

"With the information that we have just now, it isn't making a huge amount of sense," said Pat tonight, adding that,"This has surprised me, going this far."

"It all doesn't add up at the moment. It has come out just now but I think more has to come out and I'm looking forward to hearing that. If it was just a simple falling out or a personality clash between the two of them over that one incident, it just doesn't seem to ring particularly true."

Meanwhile, The Sun football writer Martin Lipton also agreed that it makes no sense and thinks Mourinho's action may be a distraction technique, although there may also be underlying issues at play.

"I just think it's a little bit of a distraction technique after the match," he said, adding that Carneiro's decision to thank the public for "overwhelming support" on Facebook in the wake of Mourinho's harsh public comments was far from "smart".

"Nevertheless, I do suspect that there is somewhat more underlying tensions and perhaps this was the straw that broke the camel's back."
