'Liverpool are roughly where they ought to be'

Pat Nevin believes Liverpool's loss to Manchester United yesterday is a microcosm of their problems this season.

The Merseysiders had numerous chances to score, but with Raheem Sterling, in particular, unable to find the net, Man United picked up a 3 - 0 win.

"It's not rocket science. They need some people to put those chances away," said Pat.

"This is the big debate, I suppose. A lot of money was spent in the summer and by Brendan Rodgers over a period of time and he certainly hasn't got the answer. Yes, [Daniel] Sturridge is missing, but you can't give everything to one player. It's too much of a chance to take."

He added that based on the evidence of their squad and form, they are "roughly where they ought to be."

Meanwhile, Pat believes Man United captain Wayne Rooney is proving his worth after an under-par 2013-14 and feels the form of Louis Van Gaal's side vindicates his own optimism about a Top Four finish

Pat also gave his take on the diving in the Chelsea win over Hull, but believes the booking for Diego Costa was less clear cut, although he thinks it was a "howler" not to book Gary Cahill who was already on a yellow.
