'I certainly over-estimated him' - Pat Nevin on Phil Jones

There was a time when Phil Jones was being touted as a future Manchester United great and even earned comparisons with late club legend Duncan Edward.

Yet, the versatile defender was on the end of plenty of criticism after the FA Cup fourth round draw at Cambridge United.

Regular injuries, being moved around different positions and a lack of progression seem to be an issue but Pat Nevin believes the England international still has the most potential of any of the centre-backs at the club, even if he does not match his early promise.

"I think he's still the one you can make a player from, going forward. But whether he's going to be top notch, I'm not sure. I think he's leaving it late," said Pat on Off The Ball tonight.

"I certainly over-estimated him. You don't see him flying up that wing now when he's stuck out wide. He's a much less confident player and he's also the sort of player who doesn't have that ease when he's running. To me, he's not as quick as he was when he was younger."

Pat believes Chelsea, who lost to Bradford City, "haven't got enough defenders" in the squad and also chatted about the dearth of top level centre-backs in world football at present.

With Mesut Ozil bulking up during his injury absence for Arsenal, Pat looked back at his own experience and suggested that it can be a mistake for some players to hit the weight room.
