CONFIRMED: Solskjaer sacked as Man U boss, Carrick in as caretaker

Manchester United have confirmed the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Michael Carrick to take charge for Tuesday's game with Villarreal.

United have issued a statement via their website, ending the Norwegian's near three year spell in charge at Old Trafford.

Coach Michael Carrick will assume control for the forthcoming games, including the Champions League match in Spain in two days time.

United have thanked 'legend' Solskjaer and say they will look to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season.

The club decided to act after the 4-1 Premier League defeat at Watford which left United seventh in the table, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea.

The Red Devils have lost four of their last five Premier League games, including the embarrassing 5-0 and 2-0 defeats at home to Liverpool and Manchester City respectively.

Solskjaer's compensation package is believed to be in the region of €8 million.

The 1999 Champions League hero was appointed in a caretaker capacity in December 2018, before being given the job permanently three months later.

He guided United to second place in the Premier League table and a Europa League final appearance last season and only signed a new three year contract back in July.
