COVID-19 set to decimate FA Cup 3rd round programme

The FA Cup 3rd round weekend is set to be ravaged by coronavirus.

One game is already poised to be postponed, while Derby County have said they'll field an underage side in their tie with Chorley Town.

Southampton expect their meeting with Shrewsbury Town at St. Mary's to be postponed.

As many as ten members of the League One side have tested positive for COVID-19. Shrewsbury say "several members of the Town squad and first team staff have tested positive".

They say all of those individuals are now self-isolating, adding, "The club have informed Shropshire Public Health, EFL, and the FA of the current situation and we will continue discussions with the relevant football authorities."

Meanwhile, Derby interim manager Wayne Rooney and his entire first-team squad will miss Saturday lunchtime's date with National League North side, Chorley Town.

It's due to a coronavirus outbreak at the Championship club.

Derby will instead field a team made up of under-23 and under-18 players.

A number of the first-team and staff returned positive tests for Covid-19 on Monday, with the training facilities subsequently closed.

Given the current rate of infection in England, and the number of affected clubs, it's unlikely these two ties will be the last to be impacted.
