Maguire reveals Solskjaer speech, players take responsibility for sacking

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire says the players have to take responsibility for Ole Gunn...

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire says the players have to take responsibility for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking.

The Norwegian was relieved of his duties on Sunday morning, less than 24-hours after United's humiliating 4-1 defeat away to Watford.

Maguire had been a lightning rod for criticism during the dying days of Solskjaer's ill-fated reign, coming in for particular grief from one of his predecessors as captain - Roy Keane.

"The result on Saturday wasn't good enough and the results recently haven't been good enough," said Maguire, "It's a results business and Ole has paid the price for that.

"But we have to take responsibility as well.

"The players need to take responsibility for everything on and off the football field, we're the ones that cross the white line.

"We were in this together as a group, the management and the players. Ultimately, the manager's paid the price and we're all so disappointed for that.

"But we take huge responsibility, we haven't been good enough. We know that individually, collectively, as a team and as players.

"We've got to look forward and make sure we get this club back to where it was. The players are hugely responsible for that as well.

"As a group of players we take huge responsibility. We were in it together, as a group of lads, we've done everything we can, we've got a good group of lads, a good spirit and the lads are giving everything, they want to succeed.

"The recent results and performances haven't been good enough. We take a large amount of it."

Maguire also revealed that Solskjaer addressed the squad one last time before leaving their Carrington base for the final time on Sunday.

While he didn't want to reveal too many details of the ex-manager's parting speech, the €87million defender did say it showed the measure of Solskjaer.

Maguire revealed, "The manager came in and spoke to us, it was an emotional day and everyone's got a huge amount of respect for Ole. he's a legend of the club and will remain a legend of the club.

"I don't want to go into too much depth about what he said but he wished us well.

"He said he'd be supporting us, he said we need to get back on track, get focused on the game against Villarreal now and make sure we go into it with a positive mindset.

"One thing he said was he'll be supporting us and wanting us to win every game of football, which shows the values of the man."
