Nemanja Matic commits future to Man United with new contract

Manchester United have announced midfielder Nemanja Matic has signed a new contract to keep him at Old Trafford until at least June 2023.

The Serbian international has made 114 appearances for the club, having signed from Chelsea in 2017 for a fee in the region of £40 million.

The 31-year-old, who also lined out for Portuguese side Benfica from 2011 to 2014, says he is delighted to have committed his future to United.

"I am very happy that I will continue to be part of this great club.

"As a player, I still have a lot more to give and achieve in my career and to do that with Manchester United will be a huge honour.

"This is a really exciting team to be part of, we have a good balance of youth and experience within the squad and there is great camaraderie amongst the group.

"This is a key part of the season and we are playing well. We will continue to fight to finish the season on a high and make our amazing supporters proud."

Matic has been playing well for United of late, in a squad brimming with midfield talent that includes Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, and Scott McTominay.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Matic brings a wealth of experience to his team.

"I am delighted that Nemanja has signed a new contract, I know his experience, professionalism and leadership will be invaluable to this young talented group.

"We have great strength in midfield and Nemanja’s attributes are a key part of that. Nemanja has been here for three seasons now and really understands the values of playing for Manchester United.

"He remains hugely ambitious and determined which will be vital as we look to achieve our aims over the coming years."

United have been in imperious form since the resumption of football - the 5-2 win over Bournemouth on Saturday evening was their fourth in five games since top-flight action returned cross-channel.
