Premier League confirm 6 individuals test positive for COVID-19

The Premier League have confirmed that six individuals have tested positive for COVID-19.

That total comes from the 748 players and club staff that were tested on Sunday (May 17) and Monday.

The six positives have come from just three clubs.

The figures translates as 0.8% of those tested coming back as positive.

By comparison, 10 of the first batch of 1,724 tests in the Bundesliga returned positive, or 0.58% of those tested.

The identities of those involved will remain under lock and key, and all six will self-isolate for a period of ten days.

Players have begun returning to their clubs this week, and from today are allowed train in small groups of five with no contact.

It's hoped the league can resume in the second half of June.

Player testing is not incurring any extra stress on the British healthcare system.

At least 1,600 tests are being provided to clubs each week from a private firm called Prenetics.

They say they can return results quicker than the present turnaround time of 48 hours.

"I can categorically say that the testing we're undertaking, the process we're undertaking from everything related to PPE [personal protective equipment] to the swabs to the actual laboratory analytical process, is not taking away from NHS resources at all," Avi Lasarow, Prenetics Chief Executive, told Sky Sports News.

"We work with UK-accredited laboratories, within our consortium, and the capacity which is being made available for employers to take testing for their employees, does not impinge whatsoever on NHS capability."

The next batch of test results is due on Thursday (May 21).
