Tokyo Olympics could yet fall at the 11th hour | Toshiro Muto

The head of the Tokyo Olympics organising committee is not ruling out a last minute cancellation of the Games.

The delayed XXXII Olympiad is due to get underway on Friday, despite widespread opposition from the Japanese public.

Supporters won't be in attendance at the Olympics as Japan battles against the latest wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cases in Tokyo have spiked in recent weeks and over 60 people are currently isolating in the Olympic village.

Organising committee chief Toshiro Muto was asked a press conference this afternoon whether a cancellation could occur on the eve of the Games.

“We can’t predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases. So we will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases,” said Muto.

“We have agreed that based on the coronavirus situation, we will convene five-party talks again. At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”

Earlier IOC President Thomas Bach insisted that the Olympics will go ahead, claiming a cancellation would be a huge blow to the Olympic movement.
