Amy Broadhurst through to quarter-finals of World Championships

Irish boxer Amy Broadhurst has made it into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Boxing Championships in Russia.

The lightweight won a unanimous decision against Poland's Aneta Rygielska in Siberia on Wednesday morning.

Broadhurst was full value for her decision as she kept her shape, regularly tagged Rygielska with clear and solid left hooks in the opening two rounds and staggered the Pole with a right in the second.

The Dundalk native is now just one win away from a medal in Russia.

She will meet Finland’s No. 1 seed Mira Potkonen in the last eight on Thursday with at least bronze up for grabs.

The bout is a repeat of August’s European Elite semi-final which the Finn won in Madrid.

Potkonen, who lost five of her six outings with Katie Taylor in the amateurs, forced Ecuador’s Marie Palacios into a standing count en route to the victory.

This afternoon, Cork welterweight Christina Desmond fights Canadian Myriam De Silva in the last 16.
