Andy Lee rubbishes question marks over Katie Taylor win

Andy Lee believes any question marks about Katie Taylor's undisputed title win are unwarranted.

The Bray boxer returned to Ireland today after beating rival Delfine Persoon narrowly on points.

But some feel Taylor didn't really win the fight and was fortunate to be deemed the winner.

Former Middleweight world champion Andy disagrees with those assessments however.

"Show me six rounds where Delfine Persoon won clearly on clear, effective punching," he said.

Katie Wins

"She didn't. Some of the rounds are toss-ups. The first round could have been a draw and the second round you could've given to Persoon. Maybe the ninth round is a toss-up as well.

"So there are three rounds there that are questionable and can go either way. But other than that, Katie wins. Katie was winning all the rounds and those other rounds were a toss-up and Katie was landing the cleaner punches."

He also added that Persoon being the aggressor coloured people's perception and overshadowed cleaner punching.

Andy also questioned those he feels are revelling somewhat in the situation.

"Why should people from Ireland be kind of taking pleasure in this, that she's gotten a 'gift decision,'" he said.

"To me it's a justified victory. She hasn't been given it. It's a close fight but she's won in my eyes."

Meanwhile, one of boxing's greatest ever shocks took place on the same card.

But as the dust settles, how does Andy view Anthony Joshua's loss to the unheralded Andy Ruiz?

Andy sees it more a question of character and gauged that from Joshua's overly relaxed post-fight reaction.

"He knows that he's got Eddie Hearn there," he said.

"He's been brought along since the Olympics and he'll get a rematch. So he's kind of comfortable and maybe that's played into him losing the fight because he knows he'll always get another shot."
