Boxer Maxim Dadashev dies after injuries sustained during fight

Russian junior welterweight boxer Maxim Dadashev has died following injuries sustained during his fight against Subriel Matias on Friday night.

The tragic news follows Dadashev being put into a medically-induced coma after undergoing brain surgery after the fight against Matias.

His trainer, Buddy McGirt, had thrown in the towel during the eleventh round, and was followed by Dadashev throwing up on his way to the locker room, and leaving the arena on a stretcher.

"God forbid, one punch as you know can change a whole guy's life and I wasn't going to let that happen," said McGirt in the aftermath of the match.

"I would rather have them be mad at me for a day or two then to be mad at me for the rest of their life."

The words proved to be tragically portentous, as he was discovered to have a bleed on the right side of his brain, and found to have suffered severe brain damage.

The injury was a subdural haemotoma.

The news of his death was confirmed by McGirt and his strength and conditioning coach, Donatas, Janusevicius.

Dadashev was originally from St Petersburg, and his fight against Puerto Rican Matias was his fourteenth bout from a career beginning in 2014.

The news is particularly heartbreaking given McGirt's care for his fighter.
