Federer's career hangs in the balance after more knee surgery

Roger Federer's 2020 season is over and there are concerns about the rest of the 20-time Slam winner's career following his latest knee surgery.

The 38-year-old has undergone a "procedure" on his right knee after another setback in his recovery.

Federer went under the knife on the same knee after the Australian Open and had hoped to return in time for the grass court season.

“A few weeks ago, having experienced a setback during my initial rehabilitation, I had to have an additional quick arthroscopic procedure on my right knee,” Federer tweeted this morning.

“Now, much like I did leading up to the 2017 season, I plan to take the necessary time to be 100 per cent ready to play at my highest level. I will be missing my fans and the tour dearly. But, I will look forward to seeing everyone back on tour at the start of the 2021 season.”

Federer's run to the semi-finals at Melbourne, where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets, was the Swiss legend's only tournament appearance in 2020.

He also missed the majority of the 2016 campaign with a knee injury, but was able to return and land the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2017.
