Ireland's Finn Lynch needs a strong finish tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Laser World Championship in Sakaiminato, Japan if Ireland is to qualify this week for Tokyo 2020.

Although the Bennekerry, Co. Carlow sailor won the eighth race of the series on Sunday in convincing style, he was unable to repeat the trick on Monday and slipped back to 37th overall.

On his first ever appearance at a senior-level world championship Ewan McMahon (Howth, Co. Dublin) had two back of fleet results that showed him pushing hard for experience including a 'Black flag' disqualification for early starting that masked an excellent top five position early in the race.

Two races remain and a pair of top ten results - well within his form from earlier this year - would most likely seal a place for next year's Olympics.

Vasilij Zbogar, Irish Sailing's head Laser coach said after today's racing, "I just want to see the fighting spirit tomorrow

Action gets underway on Miho Bay at 3am Irish time.
