Emotional Świątek hails supportive father after French Open victory

19-year-old Polish teenager Iga Świątek made history in Paris on Saturday afternoon beating Australian Open Champion Sofia Kenin in straight sets to win the Women's French Open title.

The victory at Roland Garros marks the first time a Polish woman has won a Grand Slam title in the Open era.

The teen won 6-4, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier to round off her phenomenal run through this tournament.

She lost just 28 games in seven matches which included the surprise victory over top seed Simona Halep in the fourth round.

Ranked 54 in the world, Swiatek becomes the lowest-ranked woman ever to win the French Open.

The Warsaw native was naturally emotional following the victory that could only be played in front of a limited crowd due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“First of all I’m not very good at speeches and I won my last tournament like three years ago, so I don’t really know who to thank.

"It's crazy for me because I've been watching every year with Rafa lifting the trophy. Now, I'm in the same place.

"I want to thank all of the fans back home in Poland and my team here because they did a great job."

Swiatek also had particular praise and thanks for her father, a former Olympic rower.

"He taught me how to be a professional.

"It's hard to describe, but he raised me in that way.

"I feel pretty confident on court and it's hard to get my thoughts together, he gave us everything.

"I love him."
