Josh van der Flier: “ I’d obviously like Joey to stay, he is a good friend of mine.”

Leinster’s Josh van der Flier says he’d like Joey Carberry to stay with the province.

Speculation is rife about the playmaker's future. He has been strongly linked with a season long move to Ulster rugby in recent week’s, due to lack of pitch time at the RDS based club.

Carbery is eager to solidify his selection in Joe Schmidt’s squad for next years Rugby World Cup with the lure of more playing time at the Northern province.

Van der Flier didn’t give too much away about his teammates' immediate future at the Dublin based outfit but says he’d love the playmaker to stay with Leinster.

The UCD alumni spoke with OTB'S Nathan Murphy at yesterday's PRO 14 television launch with Eir sport.

“I don’t know the ins and outs of it. You probably know more then me! I’d like Joey to stay - He’s a good friend of mine, and he’s obviously a brilliant player for us. I don’t know if I can say much more than that,' said van der Flier

The flanker says it’s been extra tough this season with a number of the squad retiring or departing for another club.

“It’s always disappointing to see anyone go. We had our end of season awards ball there, and seeing Ricardt Strauss retire; Isa Nacewa and the Jordy Murphy obviously heading up north.  You’re kind of hanging out with these people everyday. So, it’s kind of sad to see people go.

The Wesley College man concluded, jokingly, that if they had a 100 strong squad, that he would want everyone to stay.

“I would rather if everyone stayed and we had a one hundred man squad.”
