Le Mans 24-hour race moves to September due to coronavirus

The Le Mans 24-hour car race has been postponed from June 13th-14th to September 19th-20th because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A total crowd of more than 250-thousand people watched last year's event, which was won by double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso for Toyota.

President of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, Pierre Fillon, feels an early decision on postponement was the "appropriate solution" during the COVID-19 crisis.

"It is a question of stopping the spread of this virus, it goes without saying that we will make every effort to ensure the safety and quality of our events.

"First of all, I want to ask everyone to take no risk for themselves, their families and others. I would also like to spare warm thoughts for all the medical personnel working to protect our health.

"We are more than ever working as one team together with our competitors, partners, fans, media, medical services, organisation teams and marshals."

The ACO say the postponement of Le Mans will now to lead to a radical change to their calendar with the European Le Mans Series, the Michelin Le Mans Cup and the Ligier European Series scehdule all set to change.

In America, the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, which was due to take place next month has been cancelled for 2020.
