NBA superstar LeBron James has increased his ties with the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) by becoming part-owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.
The Sox are owned by FSG, who also own Liverpool Football Club, and James confirmed that he and his business partner Maverick Carter will join the ownership group.
"First of all, it is great to be with such a great group with FSG. They have done so many great things over the years and just that collective group of people. They're just amazing to be partners with," James said after the Lakers' win over Minnesota Timberwolves.
"I think it is pretty damn cool. It gives me and people that look like me, hope and inspiration that they can be in a position like that as well," James said of he and Carter becoming the first two black members of the board.
"That it can be done. It gives my kids and my 'I Promise' school more and more inspiration as well."
James was delighted with the outcome and is already part-owner of Liverpool with an existing stake.
"It is a great day for myself, for my family, for my school, for my business partner Maverick Carter and everyone that has something to do with our group.
"It is a pretty amazing thing and for me to be able to continue to build my portfolio off the floor also in a beautiful game like baseball."
James said that his ultimate business goal is to own a basketball team.
"My goal is [...] to own an NBA team. I have got so much to give to the game. I know what it takes to win at this level. I know talent. I also know how to run a business as well.
"That is my goal [...] my goal is to own an NBA franchise. It will be sooner than later."
