Teenage star Sarah Healy to make Diamond League debut in Birmingham

Irish athlete Sarah Healy will make her bow in world athletics' premier class when she runs in the Diamond League meet in Birmingham this Sunday.

Healy, who won silver in the 1500m at the European U20 Championships last month, will compete in the Milicent Fawcett Mile.

It marks the first time the 18-year-old will compete in the Diamond League, and the first time she runs over the mile this season.

The entry lists were unveiled on Tuesday - the same day Sarah picked up her Leaving Cert results.

Healy is among a long list of underage stars making their mark on the international stage in an Irish singlet, and this time will come up against truly world-class opposition.

Ethiopian athlete Axumawit Embaye leads the list of names taking part in the race, with a personal best of 4:18.58 over a mile, while her 1500m best is sub-four minutes.

However, Gabriela DeBues-Stafford holds the best time over a mile out of everyone in the field, running 4:17.87 earlier this season.

Healy's personal best in the mile is 5:03.57 - but that was achieved three years ago before she focused on the 800m, the 1500m and the 3000m.

With her current season's best of 4:12.00 in the 1500m, Sarah should hit a comfortable personal best in the mile if the race is paced.
