T20 World Cup makes second move due to Covid-19 situation in India

The 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup has been moved from India to the United Arab Emirates due to the Covid-19 situation in the former.

The short form cricket tournament was originally due to take place in Australia in October and November of 2020 but could not go ahead as a result of the pandemic.

Speaking to Reuters on Monday, a top official of the Indian cricket board admitted that they could not go ahead with the seventh edition of the T20 World Cup.

"We are monitoring the COVID-19 numbers in the country and there's no clarity about travel restrictions at that time," said Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal.

"We will stage it there in the UAE after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL). We will inform the International Cricket Council soon," he added.

There were over 46-thousand new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday in India where there has been 396,730 fatalities, official data on Monday showed.

The ICC set a 28 June deadline for the BCCI to confirm whether or not the World Cup could go ahead in India where the moneybags Indian Premier League (IPL) had to be suspended due to a surge of the virus.

The rest of the 2021 season's fixtures, like the full 2020 schedule, will be played in the UAE which was also nominated as back up to host the T20 World Cup.
