Pat Nevin: Getting a Hazard-level player on right side will put Chelsea among best in Europe

Pat Nevin believes the signing of a player of Eden Hazard's standard on the right wing will take Chelsea to the next level.

The Blues and manager Jose Mourinho have been criticised for their conservative game-plan in big matches, but after a 0-0 draw at Arsenal, will almost certainly win the Premier League in the next few weeks.

Speaking to Off The Ball, Pat believes Mourinho will look to improve Chelsea in the big games and thinks a major signing will help in that regard.

"I suspect they're making thoughts about how they can make it better. I think they need to do two things. One thing is they'll have to eventually replace John Terry. And if they get somebody who can do on the right hand side what Hazard does on the left hand side, they're up there - and I don't mean in England - I mean in Europe," he said.

A striker back-up is on the agenda for Chelsea and Pat backed Middlesbrough loanee Patrick Bamford to be an ideal candidate to fill in.

Pat also thinks James McCarthy should be given more licence to burst forward as he did in Everton's 3-0 win.

"That's what he's best at. If he had that in his game and he was doing that regularly, he would be considered one of the best players in the Premier League. Can he do that more often and will he do that more often? I'm not sure because really they would have to play a slightly different system," said Pat, who also gave his take on Louis van Gaal's comments on his Man United players' lethargy and feels that Juan Mata may have been affected by the defeat to Chelsea and picked up on how Everton learned from the London side's win.

Pat also gave his take on the plight of his former club Tranmere Rovers who have slipped out of the Football League after relegation from League 2.
