Woods leads the way as Presidents Cup begins

With the Presidents Cup - the bi-annual match between the United States and a Rest of the World contingent, minus Europe - getting underway tonight, Tiger Woods is set to become part of an exclusive group.

He will become only the second playing captain in the event's 25-year-history, with Hale Irwin the only other captain to do so in the inaugural staging of the event in 1994.

Woods chose himself as one of his four captain's picks and is set to lead team USA out in tonight's opening fourball match alongside Justin Thomas.

Up against Woods and Thomas is the combination of Australia's Marc Leishman and Chilean Joaquin Niemann.

The event returns to the site of the International side's only victory in the 25-year history of the tournament - Royal Melbourne in Australia.

Ernie Els captains an International side with seven rookies in their 12-man team. Els will be assisted by four vice-captains, including former Masters' winners Mike Weir and Trevor Immelman.

The event follows a similar format to the Ryder Cup, with a mixture of fourball and foursome matches before 12 singles matches on Sunday.

However, the Presidents Cup operates over four days and includes five matches on both Thursday and Friday.

Thursday features five fourball matches, before five foursome matches on Friday.

There's a double session on Saturday with four fourball matches in the morning, before four foursome matches in the afternoon.

The event concludes with 12 singles matches on Sunday, with 15-and-a-half points needed to win.

The first of tonight's fourball matches goes from the first tee at 22.32pm Irish time.
