Qarabag prove too strong for Dundalk

Dundalk are out of the UEFA Champions League after a 3-0 loss at Qarabag.

The League of Ireland champions went into the second qualifying round second leg 1-1 on aggregate from the opening leg at Oriel Park.

But they weren't able to lay a glove on their Azerbaijani opponents in tonight's return encounter in Baku.

Jaime Romero proved to be the thorn in their side during the 90 minutes. It was his excellent run and strike from distance that gave Qarabag a 12th minute lead as the home side dominated.

Indeed, the hosts had already struck the woodwork by that point among other chances.

We got ex-Shelbourne midfielder Stuart Byrne's thoughts on Dundalk during the second half on the Newsround:

Vinny Perth's side hung in there for the remainder of the half. But Qarabag essentially put the game to put on 76 minutes when Ailton found the net.

With three minutes to go of the 90, Romero scored his second to make it 3-0 and seal Dundalk's fate.

However, the Lilywhites' involvement in Europe isn't over as they now enter the Europa League third qualifying round.
