Leg injury ends Ruby Walsh's 2018 Cheltenham Festival

Ruby Walsh will miss the rest of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival after aggravating the leg injury that kept him sidelined for four months of the build-up.

The most successful jockey at Cheltenham came off his mount Al Boum Photo at the second last fence of the second race on day two, the RSA Insurance Novies' Chase.

Walsh was helped off the course before being whisked off to Gloucester Royal Hospital for X-rays which confirmed the worst.

The 38-year-old Kildare man's sister Jennifer released a statement afterwards: "Unfortunately he has aggravated a recent leg injury and will see his consultant in Dublin next week for further assessment."

Walsh was due to ride Douvan in the feature race, the Champion Chase - which was won by Altior, and trainer Willie Mullins spoke at the course.

"It’s the same place and it looked like it could be the fracture reopened. But you hear all that sometimes and then five hours later you find out the x-rays are clear but he’s very, very sore right on the same spot. He just couldn’t get his leg out on time and the horse rolled over on him."
