German-born trainer Madeleine Tylicki was on Friday Night Racing to discuss her career in Ireland and her brother Freddy’s injury.
Tylicki said that she and her family decided to move to Ireland because they decided to “try something new.” With connections to Ireland from past holidays and racing the family decided to move here when she was 18.
After moving to Ireland, however, she decided not to dedicate all her time to racing and decided to go to college to improve her English first. Tylicki then decided to work so that she could fund her work with horses and buy and train them herself.
“I’m very ambitious. I don’t mind hard work but I wanted to achieve, I wanted to do well, especially with horses.”
She finally reached the point where she could afford to dedicate her time fully to horses after 10 years in Lidl.
“I wanted to go step by step without getting too far ahead of myself but build it up gradually and I did that and it grew to such an extent that with my partner Andrew, we said… “I’ll either go to the next level with Lidl or I’ll park that for the moment and just dive into my own business which I’ve been working on for so many years.”
Tylicki also spoke about her brother, Freddy, and his injury three years ago. Freddy was paralyzed from the chest down (a T7 injury) and Tylicki said she admired him for the way he dealt with the situation.
“He was an apprentice to Dermot Weld until he finished school and then he signed up to Jim Bolger’s… He worked extremely hard to get where he was, riding wise.”
“I admire him really because it’s a very hard thing to take… it took a lot of adapting to new life.”
